DB-Mythos BETA Feedback Needed!

Post by eko »

Greetings,

I have become a BIG fan of Deathball since I discovered it and I have taken one of my previous maps and begun making a Deathball map using the same theme. It will be called DB-Mythos, inspired by my CTF-Mythos for UT, UT2K3, and UT2K4. I am following David's guidelines to the tee... nothing fancy, the dimensions are pretty much identical to Cube, I have taken some license with the way the field lines are presented, due to the theme of the map.

So here is where I stand. I'm just now getting it to the point where I'm going to start adding Volumes and all the other stuff that makes a DB map a DB map... BUT, I would really like some feedback because I am not at all happy with the lighting. My CTF Mythos maps have always had a very subdued lighting which worked well, but I don't think will work well for Deathball... so I've made it much brighter, and I hate it. I think it suxors. I'm throwing up a BETA for some kind souls to have a look at it and tear it apart and give me some feedback in this thread if they want. Also, since this is my first foray into mapping for DB, any other comments would be welcome as well.

Warning, this is NOT a playable map. It has geometry, lighting, player starts, ball start. THAT'S IT! You can run around in it and shoot the ball over the wall and it will fall into space and respawn in about 10 seconds. As far as I can tell, it is not possible to quad jump out of the arena, but there may be some tricks to getting more air that I don't know about.

Thanks in advance for any feedback which will help me continue with this project!

Peace,

Jorge 'eko' Salas

Edit: Screenshots look nice. Looks like you could use some different coloured lights, other than white. Maybe some red light reflected off the planet, or some variation of the light from your torches.

It's going up on the BuD servers. Hope to see you out there on them!

BTW, BuD was known as Beyondunreal Deathballers once upon a time. Wouldn't mind reloading it with BuF'ers.

Ack! Not yet!

Warning, this is NOT a playable map. Let me get another one up with volumes and such on it.

OK. The one up now has got blocking volumes, etc. on it. I've turned down the lights a bit and it feels better, still not convinced though.

Had a bit more time tonight, so finished putting it together... with "somewhat" better lighting (still open to suggestions). Everything is now in the map, cameras, blocking volumes, triggers, level preview. etc.

Get it here - DB-Mythos Beta 4

Radar? Playing without it made it feel like real life. Scary!

Are you saying there is no radar in Beta 4? As far as I know, it's in there. :-)

From the amount of feedback in the last two days, I sense there is a slight lull in the Deathball community, or is this about right as regards to how many folks are actively playing the mod, checking the forums?

I'm showing about 22 servers, is this about right?

Ok, I'm sorry you don't like it. It happens.

Could you explain what too much waste on it means? I thought I told the groundscrew to clean up all the garbage from the playing field. Did you find some bottles or garbage lying around?

There's colors in my map? Really?

I will be more than happy to make any changes which make it practical for a proper game. Could you please explain to me what a proper game is, and what kind of a playing field is needed for such a game?

I assume that a "fuck about" is somehow related to something which is not a proper game, but when I hear the word fuck... I usually don't associate Deathball (or any other solitary first person game) with it. I like to keep my fucking between myself and my significant other. I don't "fuck about" if you catch my meaning.

Thanks for the lucid, insightful, and verbally clear comments. If english if not your primary language, I apologize if any of my colloquialisms have to be looked up, and if I misunderstood any of the meanings from your post. But, generally, I guess you meant to say you "fucking hated it". Right? :D

The radar comment was about the lack of it in beta2. I hadn't seen 4 at the time of my post.

Players on my server thought the map was large and bland. The short walls weren't great for bouncing passes off of. I thought it made things a bit more challenging.
When the keeper jumps upward, he can kill himself by going too high - that isn't cool to watch your keeper explode. He's supposed to be nigh invulnerable.
Boosting enemies over the wall to explode is always cool though.

eko mate it looks too boring and theres too much stuff on the map which is uneccessary and is pointless (waste meaning)

yeah theres no colour, like a nice green turf, or it maybe just doesnt attract me? O_o

Not practicle - It would be stupid to try a match and something lame happens due to the unpratictleness of the map (shit grammar i know)

some may like it, dont change it on my accout :P

yes im english
