And it seems "howdy" means "allo" in French (babelFish translated it like that!!) "allo" is the first french word u say when u answer the phone .... kind of "hello" but only used at the phone...

yes but "allo" in France is NEVER used unless u answer the phone ! I think every country has its own way to answer the phone !!

telling your number isn't the first thing u say when u answer the phone in England?? I saw that when i was there...

Actually it depends if u know who is calling, "allo" is for unknown call

For sure I wont say "allo" to a friend"!! I would say "Hé ma poule la forme??" kind of "hi what's up?"

I just answer: "Hi" as I don't have a thingy to know who is calling on my land line!
Though with the huge spate of "cold callers" I get now I need one. They have made me rather rude answering the phone!
