some small improvements for 2.4

Post by jarro_2783 »

I have found a small problem with db-icedemon. Sometimes players can get boosted outside of the arena and then you are stuck outside the arena until a goal gets scored. This has happened to me a few times and the bots I am playing with have also been stuck outside, then other bots try and pass to them and it really screws up the game.

The other problem is mainly in db-november, but it occures in other maps, sometimes the bot goalie stands behind the goal and he won't move from them. That's all good and well since I can score a goal easily since the goal is open. But I don't want to play like that, it's a bit unfair when you score because the bot is being retarded like that, even if it is just me against bots.

Another thing for bots, is it possible to make them shoot if there is an open goal. A few times the goalie leaves the goal and my team gets the ball, and the stupid bot runs up to the goal to shoot which in the meantime the goalie has run back to the goal and saves the goal. The other thing with bots is they don't always pass to you when you want them to, it's perfect timing if they did, but they don't and you miss an opportunity. The other thing is they sometimes pass even if there are people in the way so the other team ends up getting the ball.

I do love your game by the way, I'm not trying to tell you all the things wrong with it, it's just a few things I've noticed that could be improved.

hi2u
thx for the feedback
im sur the icedemon problem can be solved easily.
Just our AI Coder left us at a certain point, I don't know if one of our current coders has a clue about that stuff.
Some things have to be done about them anyway (all bots still think the goals are as small as in 2.3 for example).

I think bots were only given a basic understanding of the game by 2.3 ... -i think-, so there are going to be things wrong with them, I too played with bots before I moved into #dbpickup on Quakenet to play pickups.

The IceDemon thing is just a map thing.
November thing, or maps with goal's that have no wall as a backing, I remember DavidM mentioning the fact bots could not figure out how to get around walls / goal posts without a wall behind it, at the time bots were released. But iiiiiiif my memory is correct, I also remember the bots being updated, and one of the changes being something like 'bots understand walls a bit better' - I do notice them trying to go around after spending 5 seconds running into a wall but the problem is still there and I cant see that changing for a while

I believe it is possible to make them shoot, I cant remember what the numpad bot commands were but I think there is a shoot command. Bots dont always pass to you when you click RMB I know, but I never looked at it as a problem, makes things more ... well ... 'realistic' .... not exactly but im sure im on the right tracks :P

Bots will pass even if enemy players are in between the passing - line of you and the carrier, if you press RMB for the pass. Its better to move around, work yourself an open line for the pass or command the player to pass to some one open who can pass to you.

Theres ways around everything, but, I got bored of playing bots after a few months and joined the online community - Much more fun (I dont mean public games, pickup games - IRC #dbpickup Quakenet.org)

Not sure if I helped \o/

edit: booo David posted while I was typing this useless rubbish !

bots are indeed made for cube style maps, nothing else.
they require the field to be empty

but the AI in 2.3 ain't basic, really. its pretty amazing what makush coded there. i remember what we had before that.....its just impressive...but being a good/awesome player (like most here) you just want the bots to do certain things that they can't.
well, they will never be a replace for humans...but playing humans vs bots...to me its a lot harder than against any human team :>

they can defend like hell if they want to, but they lack so much in offense...but still, we had our closest 3on3 matches against bots, all vs humans were won with double amount of goals or so.
they dont score much and dont take much. results like 11:10...

nm, useless babling

their defence can be quite good and bad at times. Sometimes I'll win in league 3 1:0, others I'll still get 0:0, but yet other matches I'll win 4:2 or something like that.
However I enjoyed league 1 the most because the bots are more aggressive and it makes the play a bit better. I still only won 1:0 or drew 0:0 but it was better.

I think you just need to know what you are doing to get good bots, and if your ai programmer left you then that doesn't really help much. I'm hoping to get into a bit of AI when I go to uni and do software engineering, but I'm not starting until 2007. I just finished my hsc and I'm deferring, then I won't start any electives until 2008 and I won't be finished the course until 2011. Hopefully I'll know what I'm doing by 2009 and I might be able to do some ai for someone, but it probably won't happen for deathball unless it is still going in 3 years and ai is still needed.
