lol ye the original headphones are crap (i broke 5 of those already i think, and i still get them for free from apple - they prolly know they are poor quality and don't care :P) dunno why everyone is using them.

used Sony MDR-EX 71 SLB for some time... untill the casing of the cable started to dissolve... pretty good sound though.
showed me once again that i never ever should by sony, not even earphones.

using sennheiser PMX 60 now

so, nothing special, cba to pay 100€+ for some headphones that will break after 2 months anyways :P

Sennheisers usually won't break ^_^

And the money is worth it, I swear /o\
I just can't listen to what most people call 'normal' head-/earphones now!

I normally consume up to 8/9 pairs of headphones a year. But the original Ipod headphones work quite fine with me atm :)

And Fee, Pink > jew too. ;)

David, although I'd love to carry an old record-player on my back, and a good hi-fi amplifier with some grado's; an ipod is a way easier alternative for some high-quality music.

See, I'm quite fond of my records and cds :) and while I simply can't listen to the former on the road, and I'm afraid to damage or lose the latter (not to mention the fact I can't carry many cds with me all the time); an MP3-player is the best alternative.

I tried cd-players, but they skip easily, you have to carry CDs with you (or will only be able to listen to one), and they're pretty big.
I tried minidiscs, but with my demands regarding quality, you can't fit a lot of music on there /o\ and it's a bit tedious loading new music on them.

On top of that, when I bought the ipod, it definitely presented the best sound quality by far available 'in your pocket'.

I don't see why I should be a marketing victim :)
Sure..the ipod has become a bit of a 'trendy' accessory in the mean time, but that doesn't change the way it sounds.

ps: Though if it makes you feel better, you can call me a big time marketing victim any time <3

edit: might I add though, that regardless of me bashing the ipod-earphones, they're actually the best ones I've heard that come default with music-players, and they've repeatedly been regarded as nearly equal to the Sennheiser MX 350s and MX 450s

the ipod isn't the only mp3 player out there

you can get sometinh equally as good as the ipod for cheaper

yes, what speedy said

marketing victim because they make it appear so cool and trendy that they can sell it for so much money, even tho there are way cheaper ones with the same quality or better. marketing makes all and sells all.

prime example would be cat food :P
the well known ones are all very very unhealthy for your cat, but their image is that its very noble, delicate etc, but its just shit (and lots of sugar, so your cat likes it, like kids would eat chocolate all day long)
oh nm, wrong topic :P
just be nice to your kitties and dont buy whiskas, kittekat etc \o/

That's not true :)

People need to understand the ipod isn't only loved by trendy whores.
The ipod presents the best audiophile quality without an amp.
With an amp the Rio Karma comes close, but only because it has a better equaliser (afaik the ipod mini only has presets, what about the others? can the presets be hacked/changed? they suck imo ;p) with which sound can be boosted and tweaked. The Karma lacks bass though :D

Seriously, the iPod has superiour sound quality! It's not 'just' pretty.

Sure, you can't compare the ipod with top-notch audiophile hi-fi speaker or headphone set-ups at home, and definitely not with a recordplayer there.
But the ipod is a portable player, and the best there is.
With an amplifier and some kick-ass headphones..it can really rock.

Although I cba to buy and carry an amplifier with me (there are actually some excellent small and portable ones you can find on HeadRoom), it can definitely do some serious stuff.
There's a reason audiophiles around the world are creating a huge demand for ipod accessories. That's right, not the trendy socks, shock-absorbant casing and whatnot; but ipod gadgets custom made to largely improve sound-quality like mini-amps, and in-ear-canal balanced armature headphones with top-notch analytical sound quality.

Personally, though I don't claim to possess über-hi-fi-equipment, nor proffessional hearing for that matter; I'm very satisfied with the iPods quality.

Compared with CD-quality, it lacks a bit of presence and clarity, and is a bit weak driving the bass on most good headphones(like all portable players tbh)..but is definitely good.

ps; David, kitty-food is a lot like McDonalds then \o/ sells really good because it's addictive and way too sweet etc. (only 7 of McDonald's products have no sugar..even the salads contain it x_X)

from how many ipods ive seen break, and for how many people say the Zen sleek/touch is better value, the ipod isnt as good as it people see it...from what ive been told and seen. besides, its just one thing which come above other mp3's as a give away to all the competitions.

As I said, I don't care about style and looks.

'Sleek/touch'? Sure, whatever. Sound mate.
Breaking? I don't throw it around..it's fine in my pocket; not even a scratch after a year.
It's stronger than the Zen's housing o_O what are you talking about. If I'm correct the Zen's housing is aluminium?

Anyway, what you say tells me everything tbh.

"From what I've been told and seen"
Don't you understand? You need to *listen*, not see, and not be told.

You're not going to buy a pair of headphones, an amplifier, or anything without listening to it first right?

If so, you're the one that's the marketing victim :)

Test stuff before you buy it :D

As far as hardware goes, the ipod shows good, analytical values for an accurate and a considerably equal display of all sounds (in all ranges), sure it has it's merits and demerits, but so far most audiophile sources claim it's better than most other portable players (Stereophile.com had a pretty honest analysis :o).
What really makes a difference in all of this though, are headphones (and optional amplification) and file formats.

The AIFF-format is absolutely superb, and I think it's the best I've seen so far.
It's lossless, and though it takes up space..it is suparsexy. It owns MP3 so much >_<
The iRiver and the Rio Karma only support FLAC, which isn't as user-friendly and widely supported as AIFF yet, it seems..and usually some artefacts are created converting (but that will most likely be fixed :s should be right? x_X).
The Dell PocketDJ and the Zen Touch only support WAV for that matter xD which isn't very good or efficient.

As for the headphones..:D get a mini-amp and some Sennheiser HD 650, or some custom-shaped Ultimate Ears UE-10 Pro in-ear-canal-phones ;p
Most importantly though, the ipod does a kick-ass job on driving headphones, making my 50 Ohm (impedance) Sennheisers last for at least 8 hours straight, while the standard is usually 16 or 32 Ohm.
