#Dbpickup

Post by `Ghost` »

Yup, surprised no one's already mentioned it in a thread, but after what recently just happened I thought Id make a comment on it

#dbpickup, new ops were recently picked - k thats fine, they're active etc.

A 3 minute rule has been introduced to the pickup... Join the server the pickup just started on, within 3 minutes or get a ban. Sure fine, people turning up 20 minutes late is annoying, and should be punished... but 3 pointless minutes? .. somethings wrong

Before I continue I will remind the readers that the very impatient players will reply to this in objection :p

:hmmmz:

Ok so a pickup starts, every one joins the server apart from one guy. One guy who's got a PC that struggles to match the minimum requirements for UT2k4 / DB. So hes loading up the game. He opens the server list, enters the ip, loads the server/map what ever it loads. He may have started opening the game with full intention of trying to meet the 3 minute rule thing, but if his computer quite simply cant do it, should he deserve a ban? I recently got myself a new computer after my last heap of junk packed in on me, that computer took 5 minutes at least to load the game and load the server. So im saying id be getting a ban for every pickup I add too :) which makes no sense what so ever, being as I turn up and play.

Ill use riCo as an example, 2.3, he'd turn up to our 5v5's sometimes 10 minutes late - One time, 20 minutes late, and I remember because some one said something like we must be idiots to wait here for 20 minutes. If I remember riCo'd also get some comment like 'always last' or some one would ask 'whos missing?' and 'who do you think' would be the answer - obviously riCo (at that time) This is the sort of player you punish for being late. 3 Minutes is a joke full stop :p

So what happened recently, a 3v3 pickup began, all players but one joined within the 3 minutes, I know I was quite lucky to get there myself because DB had crashed the first time I had loaded it (thats also another reason this rule is pathetic! unexpected crashes of either the game or their computer, maybe even their ISP) any way, this player turns up something like 5 minutes after the pickup had started, why? Because he was closing a game he had already been playing (Why close a game to add a pickup, especially with the recent success rate of a pickup filling at all)

He was banned. Some one will reply saying he was banned for another reason, fine maybe so, but the people banned for turning up more than 3 minutes late previously BUT joining in a respectable amount of time? ....

Any way Im posting despite leaving the community and almost DB itself in a kind of protest, but to tell the truth im just sick of DB's euro community. The 3 minute rule enforced, took the bloody biscuit.

So sort this out ! Decide a RESPECTABLE time allowance, not some impatient player's 3 minute decision.

(Also a big thumbs up to the American community for putting the Euro one to shame, thats based on attitude towards most players)

P.S: The above comment does not include mael :p

edit: theres a point in the post some where

See, I didnt impose these tyranical rules while i was Op.

I just banned people cos i thought it'd be funny. It never actually WAS funny but that didnt seem to bother me much.

Viva la revolution! *gets a pitch fork*

..actually, scrap that... I cant be arsed.

Dont worry, though, because as with most things in DB double standards will shine through. As soon as an Op (or someone deemed "influential" to the DB dynamic) misses this 3 minute window there'll be the opportunity for an 'excuse' where before there was none.

Give it time padawan, give it time.

P.S I dunno how bad this timing thing is, to be honest, so ... +1 really.

oh my oh my :)

what happened was.....
shady always says (for fun) "ban ban" when someone is 1 second late
well he being 1 second late, i banned him 30 minutes for fun. explained it etc, no prob. hi2u.

otherwise i only banned rico and hooker for not showing up...they ask for bans every day anyway -_-
(they didnt show up after more than 10 minutes)
nobody else was banned...
for good reasons

its basically lies to claim something else :)
why do all go "omg omg david bans all blah blah". its just certain people anyway. others are able to see whats going on actually \o/

sure, you are pissed about something and you need to steam somewhere, go for it

I never saw anyone got banned for showing up after 4 minutes. Common sense makes more sense than strict rules.

Is the bird flu thing in the UK yet?

and @ DavidM, im not pointing at the Shady incident completely, it was just an example. Im on about bans that took place that didnt even include you some times. Just really annoys me people think 30 seconds over 3 minutes deserves a ban its a bit of a joke. So is 3 minutes, increase it to something respectable for all players. 3 Minutes is kind of racist in a way, its being racist against slow computers. Just think of the poor slow computers trying to compete....

yeah im in a good mood, make no sense when im happy do i? woo \o/ me and Hazel are back \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ wooo together i mean wooo \o/

i always tell people that when they have slow computers and all know that it takes a bit longer for them, that its no problem. but who would that be? hardly anyone. its just about joining as fast as you can, cant tolerate people who talk for 5 minutes, then join

Three minutes is plenty of time to get in the game, and i'm sure there is a bit of room allowed if you're a couple minutes late, prolly other reasons behind people getting banned, and just using the three minute rule as a nice excuse:P

iirc i said something like 3 mins then highlight -> if no reaction (like join/excuse etc) within another 3 mins -> 1h ban
and i didn't see any bans that didn't meet that requirement, but on the other hand, i'm not much around lately either....

but sure the waiting time can be shortened or the ban time extended if the person in question obviously refuses to join asap.

and a note: this is not intended as a rule (there are no "!rules" in #dbpickup anymore), it is just a guideline, with the aim that everyone only has to wait before a pickup starts and not afterwards.

If we enforced that rule in #dbmixer there wouldn't be any games anymore \o

Idd, yet the community is less hostile and less angry about things like that tbh

edit: much more patient, relaxed about it (better way of saying it?)
