Most missed musician of the 1900s

Post by Messy »

So..who of these deceased musicians do you think could have done much more for music if it hadn't been for their (unexpected) death?

Mind the question tbh ;p this is not about how much you like their (band's) music or how much he did or changed in the world or music..but how much more he could have done :)

ps: Now go ahead and vote and moan about how useless or stupid this thread is, if you wish ;)

pps: As the title said it's not about musicians before the 20th century, so as to not have to include people like Bach, Beethoven, Schönberg etc. :D That would be unfair imo..

ppps: Yeah, my vote goes out to Cliff :) imo Metallica never could live up to it's potential after such an awesome start with Cliff (arguably) as a driving force.
For those who don't know: he was a (highly) classically influenced and brilliant metal bassist who died in a highly unfortunate accident while the band were touring for the 'Master of Puppets' album..

* Syd Barret: I know he's not dead! But something in him decided to leave and never return, rendering him incapable to do much more than one mediocre Pink Floyd album (showing his potential - and the rest of the band's - despite not being a remarkably original album as a whole) and two weird (but arguably brilliant) solo albums.

death is the bestestest carrer push.
nobody would care about elvis today if he still lived, I suppose ;)

but this way, countless people miss him like mad, and afterall he was the most outstanding and most influential musician EVER

Axl and Slash both aren't dead, and are actually still the same person, whereas Syd, although still alive, is locked up in his Cambridge basement jumping up and down brushing his teeth all day :)

And yeah DavidM, Elvis has been quite influential; but Robert Johnson has had at least as much influence in today's (rock, blues and metal) music, despite dying in 1938 :)
The question, though, is about how much more the artist could have done ;p

For example, I don't think Robert Johnson could have invented a newer style that late in his life, and I reckon Elvis couldn't have either, I also think Kurt was kind of at the end of individual progression (he'd be about as important and legendary as whatsisname from Smashing Pumpkins) as opposed to Syd Barret who was just at the start of his career and showing enormous potential, Jimi Hendrix seemed pretty much born with his great sense of style (and composing brilliance) but was moving in a new direction shortly before he died - though I'm not sure there was much potential in that -, and I suspect Cliff had only shown us a figment of his talent (his soloes are true bach-inspirated masterpieces)..but that's just my opinion.

..point is, a lot of the artists in the poll have done a lot for music, some have done less; but it's about the new progressions they could have still brought if they'd been alive longer.

i know what you mean
but hey come on, this thread is way too advanced for the forum users here.

it will just end up all picking their favourite dead artist...and done.
people arent as smart as you want them to be :D

1 out of 10000 people has sufficient music history insight for this.

i already told messy, i'll write it again.
the only sane answer for me here is "nobody"

all influental musicians have set one importand landmark, but nobody ever set 2, even those who became really old.
so:

nobody

Wow it's missing a lot of artists:

- Bob marley
- 2Pac Shakur
- Nat King Cole
- Marvin Gaye
- Notorious BIG
- Freddie Mercury
- Janis Joplin
- John Lennon
- Van McCoy
- Jim Morrison

- Milli Vanilli (just kidding)

and a lot more, I miss all of them equally but I will have to say Freddie Mercury.
