I heard on the news today that an islamic guy got arrested for looking like and pretending to be a suicide bomber.

Now I don't condone his actions. He must have scared the shit out of a lot of people. But his argument was that free speech is all well and good - but there have to be controls.

What he was doing was no different to what the cartoons did to the islamic people, ie provoke a strong negative emotional reaction.

He did what he did to get his point across - and to be honest its a fair point.

Secondly I don't think it is right to generalise on Islamic intentions. I seriously doubt the people who have a problem with the cartoons are the same people who deny the existence of the Holocaust.

The latter are a tiny percentage of the former. Just because the idiotic Iranian president says something controversial, doesn't mean all Muslims should be cast under his umbrella.

I agree that rioting because of this cartoon is ridiculous, but I also think that there is a small group of extremists who are the protagonists. I would guess of a similar type who caused the furore over the Salman Rushdie novel, The Satanic Verses.

um...you can get arrested for saying you're gonna kill somebody, because what if you're serious? what exactly was his point? i don't know of any suicide bombers saying what they do is a free speeach issue.

but just because he dressed like one - it was seen as insulting to the victims of the London bombings. Which it was. It was a joke that wasn't funny.

Just like those cartoons.

Yet he got arrested, while nothing was done about the cartoons.

I guess he felt people needed to be made aware of that slight hippocrosy

you can't arrest someone for drawing a cartoon, unless they're guilty of liable, or they can be sued for defamation, which should be the course of action for Islamic radicals, not violence. If you dress up as a suicide bomber you're percieved as a danger to the people around you, and you have a right to be arrested. That isn't hypocritical, because it's two completely different things.

actually you don't have to be dressed as a bomber to be perceived as a danger. Like that guy who got shot dead by the police a couple of months ago.

Wonder why they didn't shoot this guy dead on sight?

Maybe these were better cops. There are good cops and bad cops. Guys get shot dead by the police a lot, trust me, it happens a lot in NYC.

Probably, just how many times have certain point of views been censored by newspapers worldwide for being unacceptable or considered racist, anti-semitic, not suitable for children, maybe even JyllandsPosten has done this before many times, and now suddenly it seemed acceptable to publish those cartoons, which are clearly offensive to muslims.

Freedom of speech sure is a great thing, on paper, but apparently it only seems to matter from time to time.

And also, with freedom of speech comes great responsability. There's has been so many cultural shocks between Europe/USA and the islamic world lately, so much going on, that it just seems completely stupid to provoke muslims right now, and well, the consequences are now well known.

It ruined many ppl lifes, it's getting middle east countries and european into lot of diplomatic troubles, and all because some guys thought they had the right to insult (aka "freedom of speech")

Actually, these views were anti-semitic. And they were condemned, the editor who published the cartoons was fired. It was stupid to put up in the first place, but it's getting blown out of proportion because it was the spark that these radicals were looking for. If it wasn't this, it would have been something else.

The guy wasn't arrested. He was dressed as a suicide bomber which ofc caused some upset. He formally apologised and agreed his actions where taking things too far etc.

They did however, on the same new report say that in future these protest should be treated differently, especially if violence is being encourage or threaten. They are investigating the situations to mark out when it *is* ok to step in and make arrest's.

I personally agree with the side that think more should have been done. With the protest in London outside the Denmark embassy, it's fair enough they wanted to speak out about the situation, but to then threaten more terroist attacks on London .... ?!?? It doesn't make any sense and just makes these "groups" and indiviuals looks stupid. Inditing violence on this level, on a city that didn't even re-print the cartoons .... well I personally don't see the logic.

Also Abu Hamza got sentenced to seven years (about bloody time)! So seems the police are slowing kicking into action.
