This gem wasn't her. It was just holding the substance in which her personality resided. That substance is volatile, as soon as the gem breaks, the substance vanishes and the personality is lost forever.
When our body dies, and the surrounding conditions are the right ones to feed us, a new hull grows inside the old one, encapsuling the substance and creating a new body around it.
