Need Computer Help

Post by DavidM »

Well :o
my 2nd computer doesn't show any drives except c:
They are all properly installed and showing in device manager, but not in 'my computer'.
It doesn't even show mounted drives.
It recognizes them, but I can't use them.

Any idea anyone?

Type "compmgmt.msc" at the command prompt. Select Storage > Disk Management from the side panel. Right click on the drives and create the partitions.

Try formatting them with the drive manufacturer's own tools.

It's nothing about them.
Even if I put in another HDD or anything...it all won't show.
It says "new hardware found...installed, ready to use" etc....it's not showing.
The drives all work before windows is loaded (booting from dvd for example).
The drives are available in windows, but not being shown/used for some reason :/

Can you access them from the command prompt? Guess not since it doesn't show in disk management. I'll have to cogitate on it.

Are they all SATA?

A loooong shot: You have a DVD-ROM, right? Any virtual ROMs? Have the machine "contracted" Starforce, by chance? It all sound like something I read some time ago. It just occured to me, but like I said: It's a long shot.

He's casting aspersions on the nature of starforce "protection". He means have you got it installed.

The removal tool is here.

contracted, as in "Starforce installing components unknown to the user, and refusing to uninstall, AND messing up hardware devices such as DVD-ROMs.

About slander: Yes, it is basically what I read about starforce, but to be honest, I can't vouch for it, though I really don't want to have it on my computer.

If it is starforce, then the best suggestion I can give, is to google the forums out there. If it isn't, then I have no idea :(

Could try disabling all non-essential drivers and processes. Something may be hiding them I guess.

Type:
Set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
Start Devmgmt.msc

Select Show hidden devices from the view menu. Look through all the non-plug and play drivers and remove any you know you don't need.

Autoruns is good for processes.
