Do you live in Europe or NA?
Both continents have their own pickup-channels, where you can meet the community and sign up for some quality games in passworded servers.
You might not be able to keep up with the more experienced players in the beginning, but you can learn a lot by speccing, talking to them, and maybe jump into some pubs with people
For Europeans the channel is #dbpickup, for Americans it's #dbmixers, both in irc.quakenet.org. If you don't have an IRC client yet, I suggest plain old mIRC.
