Yeah this camera has manual (some of them aren't totally manual, but they have lots of different settings, ie different focus levels) settings for most of what you spoke of, white balance, iso, exposure time, shutter speed and there are several different focus levels aswell as normal auto focus.
The macro performance is pretty good, I took a coupld of pictures last night extremely close up of my monitor with macro mode and they weren't too bad at all. Some pictures of coins / keyrings also.
It has 3x optical zoom, and i've disabled digital zoom completely already as i've been told in the past how poor and pointless digital zoom is.
I can take a picture about a second after I turn it on, it was one of the selling points in the reviews I read before buying it, aswell as (quite sad I know but) the fact I thought it looked nice and was really small
Not sure what the magnifying glass mode is, i've not really read the manual yet and the camera isn't with me, im going away for the weekend and taking the cam so i'll play and up some photos when I return, thanks for the input
Oh and I appreciate it's not brilliant, just didn't want to spend too much money on something I might not really enjoy doing.

From what I've learned, Canon's Powershot series are really qualified for beginning photographers. I've seen some test results of a friend of mine with a very old Powershot and they were amazing. Detailed contrasts, deep colours, great results.
I started with an Olympus, can't remember the exact type. Later my mom bought a Olympus Digital MJU 600: review
Now the FM2, it's so nice to be in control of everything. Manual settings are a must for good photography. Of course, this also counts with compacts Being able to adjust your own settings allows you to learn the basics of photography. Very important.
I'll post some more results of my first roll tonight! ^_^

I concur
I have a cannon powershot a400, when looking to update to digital I looked at ALL the reviews for camera's within my budget which was £150 max and the powershot came out top everytime. It was a great starting point for me , and after having it for a few years I have loved it. It's only now that I want to do more advance things that it's frustrating ^^
But until I have enough money to get an slr for example I am more then happy with it, cannon are well known for good quality within photography
So decided on a price range and then do some review reading and decide !
