I can feel a slight difference that you're concentrating on something, but it's not nearly as noticeable as the difference between awake and asleep.

Well, thinking hard doesn't make very much difference to brain activity. The rhythm of brain waves changes dramatically when you sleep. Maybe eventually I could make myself into a sort of human fMRI, though and tell which brain area you're using
