There's only a few peeps hosting, and it wouldn't really make sense to not give it to players too.. Any improvements would generate chatter. Chatter bout the game = good.
Might lead to actually playing the game.

New beta.. share.

Just an idea...

make the install for the 2004 beta "idiot proof"

e.g. u just have 1 zip or exe to d/l (at first), and it installs with the correct paths!!!

I think the idea of issuing them privately/ just to a few in irc/here, etc for the stage beta releases is a good one. Esp atm as there's no need to keep swapping files between beta and latest, because the latest is still in ut2003.

Yes, a note stating it's going to be buggy are good, but you should know that when participating in beta testing.

plz make it so this time when you run deathball it doesn't show DM and CTF servers etc and just Deathball. And also when you try to join a server and its full for e.g you press escape and it runs the UT2003.exe server browser instead of going back to the Deathball one.

Yeah I sort of agree with Cor on this. As much as I think a beta is a good way of showing people you are making progress and a way to sort of hold people over until the final release is out, I was just playing on the beta server and in only like 30 minutes of playing I saw 2 people who had never played DB before. Needless to say they were less than impressed and even with me telling them that this was a beta and to either wait for the final version for 2K4 or to try out the 2K3 one, they both still kept complaining about the game and vowed to delete it ASAP and never play it again. So. . .I dunno. I was happy playing the beta and glad to see the progress, but in 30 minutes I also saw two new potential people get turned off of DB forever it looks like, pretty much because it was a beta. So yeah mehaps a more private release would be better, but then again it is probably a little late for that now. Oh well, just my thoughts.

i haven't tried the new full beta yet.. how different is it from 1.9b? And why were these people turned off? Were there constant bugs or do they just not like the gameplay? Cause if it's similar to 1.9b and they just dont like it then it's not the game for them anyway.

I was under the impression that this new beta was pretty much a port of 1.9b and should work very similarly. How many gameplay bugs are left in this new version??

Well I didn't play 1.9b, so not sure if it is a straight port. That being said it is definetly a little different than whatever the last version I played was. (1.9?) Different hud, sounds, ball, etc. . . As for bugs, no really major ones that I saw. Well I couldn't lock-on to anyone to pass, but I seemed to be the only one with that trouble. Also I got a general protection fault when I tried to exit DB. Hard to tell what turned off the new guys. I mean there were no glaring bugs, but at the same time, the game we were playing (there was like 7 of or so) didn't really resemble a real game of DB. No one was really scoring or anything, just sort of going up and down the field chasing the ball. I am not sure if this is because the others were just testing the beta and not looking to really play, or if maybe most of the people there were new and didn't know how to play. So I suppose on reflection it wasn't really the bugs in the beta that turned them off, I guess I just feel bad for them because what they were seeing didn't really resemble DB. On a side note, one of them was a real ass when I tried to explain to him that this was a beta, so probably best he didn't become a permanent member of the community.

You cannot lock to anyone if the aimcone is set to 0°
think about it :)

Yes the aimcone being set to 0 degrees would definetly do it. I suppose I just wasn't expecting it to be set there by default. So I'll take a look at it and see if that was what was up with the passing.

mmm.

just a question why are there two serverpackages deathball thing in default.ini?

[Engine.GameEngine]
MainMenuClass=Deathball.DB_MainMenu
ConnectingMenuClass=Deathball.DB_LoadingScreen
ServerPackages=Deathball

ServerPackages=Deathball

surely you dont need it to write it twice? =S

also you might as well fix the escape menu and in game menu as well... it shouldnt be too hard

Question is not "Are we too stupid to do something?", it's "Do we have time to do something?".

We are working on menus....
