personally, i think buying a 64bit processor right now is a waste, because there is nothing yet that utilizes the technology (its sorta like buying PCX vid cards right when they come out, they will be expensive, and the technology wont be caught up with them yet)

on a side note, i just bought a volcano 11 last night, and so far i love it, works great. Full blast its kinda loud (sounds like a weak hair dryer) but half blast, i cant even hear it. Full blast is around 5087 RPM.

Anyway, for $30 usd, its well worth it imo. I got it for my 2600+ barton

Don't think of the AMD64s as 64bit then, just stupidly fast 32bit processors.

What should he be getting instead? Intel? :p

they arent fast, only around 2 ghz

just really powerful

what i meant was, nothing uses them to thier full potential yet, so dont waste your money on them yet.

comparing an intel and an amd is like comparing a car and a truck, cars (intel processors) are fast, and get places quick, but are less efficent, and dont have a lot of torque. Trucks (amd processors) aren't as fast, but are very efficent, and have a lot of torque

really depends on what you want/need

Thanks for the lesson Dis.... :)

I know all about the clockrate/IPC debate (seems AMDs won that one already, what with Intel scrapping its previous roadmap in favour of the Pentium M processor). Who cares whether they're used to their full potential yet or not? Sure they have extra registers and the like that have yet to be used (get off ya backsides ms + driver developers) but as far as gaming is concerned they beat all comers (bar Intels insane pr chips in certain circumstances).

I'm not seeing the price premium that you obviously are. They seem reasonably priced for their performance in todays applications. What's more, even the 9800 pro is CPU limited in alot of games, so it can only make sense to buy the fastest you can afford.

This all depends on your upgrade cycle (and budget) of course. I like to squeeze every bit of usefulness out of a new comp before upgrading, which could last as long as 3 years. If however you like to stick to a yearly, or heaven forbid, 6 month cycle, then it would obviously be better to go with cheaper parts.

Wooh :D got the money today =)
I'll be losing most of it again after this purchase (mobo + cpu + psu is quite a lot of money /o\) but it'll be worth it :)
The rest is also already kind of spent on 2 new CDs ¬_¬ but they were worth it too ;p (Led Zeppelin - How The West Was Won and Sepultura - Roots fyi :p)
