It's a nice thought, but it lends itself to people building a money team of ringers.

The DBL failed because it was no fun - and this was thanks to the 'win at all costs' mentality of some teams. Rewarding this would be a stupid idea.

I think a money league would be something to try. Have each team that wants to join the money leagues put up $50(or so) to sign up, and the winning teams get the cash to be distributed as they see fit, maybe a consolation prize for 2nd place. This would definately motivate people to actually play the matches.

And of course, if a team is against it, they don't have to play. They can join free leagues.

However, I don't know if it will really get new teams to form and enter the league. They would put up thier $50 and lose thier first match 20-1 and quit like every other team before. But who knows.

Of course I'm only saying this because I think my team can win. But I also would like to get back into league play, it always was exciting.

T-shirts would also be cool.

There would probably be 4 NA teams that may sign up for this. I'm sure RusH would sign up at least one.

EDIT: I don't see a way this can be done fairly by donation from the community. A sign up fee would be the best way.

well, sign up fee scares people away...especially since most know they will never see this money again...
but those who sign up will do it seriously
no "we only play one match in 2 months" teams....but you hardly get many teams this way

Still deciding on this one... but i do like the idea. So far i'm most in favor of doing a team sign-up fee (I just don't think individuals will donate much to it). And as for the prize i think t-shirts is the best idea. The team sign-up fee would not have to be much.. maybe $20 to $30, which should not be too daunting.

Take NA for example, even if we only have 4 teams (hopefully more but i think we would have at least this).. if each team puts in $30 to sign-up that gives us $120 to buy 7 shirts. Seems reasonable.

As mentioned though there are tons of problems that could come up because of this. As an example, if one team is already out of the running for first place, they really will have no motivation to play their matches which makes it a pain for the competing teams to finish the league.

Not to mention the hostility that playing for a prize would create. So maybe the best idea is to just get the damn league running first.... have a trial season to see how it works and then maybe add prizes in for next round.

I think some of the recognition ideas are great as well, especially for the first season if there are no prizes.

well said

it looks like money prizes have more cons than pros

but sign up fee is a crap idea, won't do that. i need to attract people!

If there is a way to do it without a signup fee, I agree it would definately attract more players, and be better. I really don't know how much has been donated, but if you can't get enough donations to where it is feasible, I would suggest a sign up fee then.

The problem with a league is that if it takes too long to run (say more than a month and a half - that's about 6 or 7 weeks), it's VERY hard for new clans to enter, because there's simpley no opportunity too. Running something along the lines of things like the NFL where you have a season with small groups of teams then playoffs is a good idea imo, because it shortens the season length, and also gives you a climax to the season.

Money prizes - NO. NO. NO. NO. x 30000. All it would do would be to encourage people to play unfairly and in a very unfun fashion.

I still strongly suggest a ladder rather than a league. Or run a ladder alongside the league (be it a DBL one of the ESL or whatever).

Remember - short seasons attract more new teams, because people have more oppotunities to sign up. Less games = shorter seasons, or games played more often.

and what about NA people?

oh yeah, we are the forgotten/neglected ones

David when i organized DB smackdown i used to put a Server as winning prize and it worked well and it had a low cost aswell.
And imo it's nicer than money :)

Btw as i told , Teams have never played Ladder games, even when we had a Ladder in clanbase site.
And about new teams not allowed to join a running league.... it's true, as reqqy said, i think we should also have a Active LAdder in CLanbase to solve this problem, and to bring new players :D
