there have been proven studies done that if someone who "steals" a game or "steals" music, the odds of them buying the product in the first place doesn't justify cracking down on it in most cases
not sure if i agree on this one. I have a feeling this may have been the case a while ago. But with faster connections available to more and more people nowadays, i think this argument may no longer hold. Why take time and effort buying something when its easier and cheaper to download it.
Many would argue that if more people bouhgt a game or music, than prices would go down, but its just not the case. Why the hell would they lower thye price if they have MORE buyers that they have now.
this i do agree with but only when looking at it from a large scale viewpoint. it's simple economics, if demand increases, the price goes up. There are unlikely to be significant economies of scale for products that are already mass produced (law of diminishing returns)
however, smaller scale productions are more affected by this since they have to operate on tighter margins to compete with larger operations. All piracy is doing is stifling the truly creative people. So next time you complain about the commercialisation and blandness of the modern media. Blame the piraters.

This is completely accurate, and I agree with this standpoint, but on the other hand look at games like UT2004 for example. They don't make a lot of money off the actual game, but instead they make it off of licencing the engine to other companies to make games on. Epic might sell hundreds of thousands of copies of unreal, but per licence they make $300,000 (ballpark, this is what it was at last report if i recall and makes up for $300,000 of the MSU prize). Who are you really selling your product to?
In the case of Doom3 this same factor applies. I'm sure a LOT of companies are very interested in the engine. The same can be said for the HL2 engine. This is just inherent to the industry though, gamers just suffer the consequences.

CripTonic has a point :- so im gonna go ramraid Dixons and steal a widescren telly

this should help bring down the price for all of you. Thank me later.

doesn't work that way. By stealing a telly, dixons need to get a replacement so you actually stimulate demand to the supplier to physically make another telly. so prices for the consumer still rise.
'Stealing' software doesn't do that since pirating software reduces demand.

Cha, stealing is good.
You know what? I'm going to go out and kill someone
After all, killing is good, it drives down populations, and if the individual is chosen properly, it may increase the quality of our country's production, bring down some taxes.
You can make up some good stuff for everything, but stealing software or music is just not good imo
Besides, how can you call yourself a gamer, or even say you support a band..if you can't even be arsed to
buy your favourite games or albums?

i call myself a gamer because I play games.
I like music so i listen to music.
Paying or not paying for something doesn't change that. :p
PS: you have serious mental balance issues if you compare stealing software to killing people... i see people like you on the news....
edit: if you wanna support your band, go to their gigs. buying their cds just makes the recording studios rich.

Nah, it's true that within us, there's a little devil
But in the end it's all about yourself, and the only way you can maintain a peaceful life and ensure yourself of offspring, is to be nice and make contacts and ensure you have as much friends and allies (..or maybe just where you need them

).
That might just be my vision of life.
Basically, I would love to kick a 4-year old to death anytime, but I don't..because people will hate me
And that's not good
