Oops, I was supposed to be creative.
Reality is subjective. As an existentialist, believing that variety is indeed the spice of life, I decide that the manhole covers are any polygonal shape I want them to be. Today, I choose half of them to be nonagons and the other half to be rhombi. So, manhole covers are round when I decide they're round.

Heheh, good answer. One question though...if reality is subjective, who the hell said you could be in charge today? I don't remember waking up with that thought.

We can both be in charge, so now we have manhole covers that are rhombangles and trapegons and other weird hybrid shapes I'm just making up as I go along.

All right...And I say that roads are bright pink with yellow polka-dots until 5 pm Eastern Standard Time. Then they'l return their normal brodcast function. Oh...one more thing...ALL THE ICECREAM IN THE WORLD HAS CHOCOLATE IN IT NOW!!! AHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! *cough*

Why are manhole covers round?
Simple - they ate too much soil.

Are they round? Really? Well, if they are, it's because the guy who invented them was having a rather silly day and instead of making them triangular like toblerone, he made then round like....................erm......................like......................i dunno what he was thinking of stupid man!

Why are manhole covers round?
That's a lie! Since our whole society is a computer generated program (as is proven in the Matrix) no figure could be round, only to be build out of polygons (which form triangles together).
Therefor, a manhole isn't round, but it appears to be round due to the high res model, 16xAA and 12xAF w/ bump mapping, alpha layers and HDR shading... =)
Can't wait on the Matrix 2.0 engine - it's rumoured that it covers exact round shapes! =)
Creative enough?

I'll grant that, but I looked into the source code of the Matrix. It's in max resolution, and covers all plane figures and many 3 dimensonal planes. Circles were part of the plane figure set-up. It doesn't cover 3 dimensonal figures over three-hundred thousand faces.

I don't care about the manholes.

I just want to know what cruel person decided to put door knobs at nut hieght. That shit hurts when you're drunk or not paying attention.

Well, obviously to neuter the dumb people...

Not dumb, just has happened once or twice though.

They have to be round because late at night, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles come out from the sewers and play Ninja Frisbee with the covers.

It's at nut height to help the lazy, and to punish the drunk. Unless you are short or really tall, that is. Then you either straddle the knob or get it in the gut.

Its obvious they are round because if they were squared, then people with cubilophobia won't go near them.
