As I said, I don't care about style and looks.
'Sleek/touch'? Sure, whatever.
Sound mate.
Breaking? I don't throw it around..it's fine in my pocket; not even a scratch after a year.
It's stronger than the Zen's housing o_O what are you talking about. If I'm correct the Zen's housing is aluminium?
Anyway, what you say tells me everything tbh.
"From what I've been told and seen"
Don't you understand? You need to *listen*, not see, and not be told.
You're not going to buy a pair of headphones, an amplifier, or anything without listening to it first right?
If so, you're the one that's the marketing victim
Test stuff before you buy it
As far as hardware goes, the ipod shows good, analytical values for an accurate and a considerably equal display of all sounds (in all ranges), sure it has it's merits and demerits, but so far most audiophile sources claim it's better than most other portable players (
Stereophile.com had a pretty honest analysis

).
What really makes a difference in all of this though, are headphones (and optional amplification) and file formats.
The AIFF-format is absolutely superb, and I think it's the best I've seen so far.
It's lossless, and though it takes up space..it is suparsexy. It owns MP3 so much >_<
The iRiver and the Rio Karma only support FLAC, which isn't as user-friendly and widely supported as AIFF yet, it seems..and usually some artefacts are created converting (but that will most likely be fixed :s should be right? x_X).
The Dell PocketDJ and the Zen Touch only support WAV for that matter xD which isn't very good or efficient.
As for the headphones..

get a mini-amp and some Sennheiser HD 650, or some custom-shaped Ultimate Ears UE-10 Pro in-ear-canal-phones ;p
Most importantly though, the ipod does a kick-ass job on driving headphones, making my 50 Ohm (impedance) Sennheisers last for at least 8 hours straight, while the standard is usually 16 or 32 Ohm.
