I must say I don't know a lot about romantic paintings and such..but I can clearly see the relevance in literature

..I guess through Romanticism 'goth' came to mean anything dark and gloomy, but I can definitely see the direct links going to what has now become the gothic subculture.
But yeah, you're not going to spot girls with long black hair and corpsepaint cutting themselves in gothic paintings.
But if that's the only way you're looking at it
