the problem with deathball is the time it takes to master. i mean i was reading pcformat mag a while ago, they review 4 mods every month. Deathball got 60% and they described it as "Bombing run with only shield guns" now how misleading and crap does that sound? but for a newbie its pretty much right on. They went on to say
You can hit the ball around and barge people around..woo how fun does that sound
Deathball needs to define itself as a game that needs to be learnt and cant just be jumped into, and until it does that its not going to get good reviews by skilless reviewers or those who dont wish to spend the time on it...
I could always write a slightely biased review for gamershell.com as i have news poster abillities there

Well, once 1.9's released, I'm hoping to code an in-game tutorial... that should help I guess (especially if it's released before 2k4 comes out). At least... I hope I can

. We'll see.
One simple "tutorial" idea

I don't know if anyone has tried the Call of Duty Demo, but it has a great, simple to implement tutorial. When you start a game, a screen pops up that is essentially an in-game screenshot with an overlayed graphical summary of all the controls as well as descriptions of everything displayed in the HUD.
Since noobs usually play before messing with all the HUD configurations, an explanation of the defaults would be fine.
This screen could automatically pop up when joining a server until the player clicked a "Do not show again" checkbox.
I'm sure any noob will feel overwelmed attempting to test this mod out because of the complexity. Mix in the noob-bashing idiots and I bet most people won't come back a second time.
And, who actually reads tutorials when trying out a mod? Most people try it at least once before deciding when to spend the time on a tutorial. Once hooked, they can be very valuable, though...
Lastly, bot support is essential for drawing new players in... Starting in a low stress off-line environment could make a huge difference.

little community that actually plays db on pubs anymore which imo that is a problem, a lot with VO
VO... symptom not problem

I disagree... (probably because I mostly play VO)
Twigster's server (as well as several other NA servers) has large maps on them, but people don't play them.
Many of us enjoy volley only... Do we play the game wrong? no, just differently. Are we the reason noobs don't come back? indirectly.. yes. Not because VO is bad, but because it isn't noob friendly. But, am I (and the other VO players) to blame? Do you think pug games are noob friendly? Even if they could figure out how to join...
The problem is not VO. The problem is the NA community has either died out, gone VO, or gone pug. The skill difference between people who've played for a year compared with those just starting out is MUCH too great. It isn't the VO players but instead the lack of enough new players to bridge between the veterans and noobs. VO players should be able to play VO like they enjoy. It isn't our faults that there aren't enough players who enjoy regular matches on PUBLIC servers.
Try this... join Twigsters when it's empty. Switch it to any large map. And wait for people to join. You are going to sit there for a long, long time. Because, the difficult thing is getting 8+ players to make reg on bigger maps fun. It's nearly impossible to do this with the size of the NA community. The only way to draw players in is to switch to a smaller map because it is still fun with as little as 4 players.
Now, people who scream VO on big maps are idiots. ESPECIALLY, when there are 8+ people. I agree whole-hearted with you there berk.

Here is some good PR at BeyondUnreal from Beefsack: "community does suck. american servers suck. shame, the game is bloody awesome fun to play

"
