Huh? I thought, about half of the cork were underwater?

I didn't think it was half. A bit less than that. But it would still miss the side (I hope). *goesofftotryit*

EDIT: Damn, we have no corks. A substitute?

...and the meniscus will keep making it fall slightly back inwards

I'd say, some invisible bacteria push the cork to the side. Heat the water, and they'll die :D

Jooly's problem actually doesn't say you can't do something radical like cut the cork in half or whittle it into a sphere - it just says you can't attach things to the cork...

edit: those bacteria are so territorial :D

Actually, I think my idea was right for a slightly different reason.

If you push the cork to the bottom of the glass, it comes up to the top, right? The cork floats to the highest possible point.

One cup is 1/2 full of water. The cork floats to the side because it is slightly higher than the middle.

The second on is full of water and it is bulging out the top. The middle is now the highest point, so the cork floats to the middle.

*crossesfingers*

Or, you could just push it down, technically not ATTACHing anything to it :D

You could try with a table tennis ball

Yes, I know it's a weird star stamp thing, but the result is the same.

You can tell I forgot to put Macro Mode on.

I tried it. It works. kinda. the trick is getting the thing to stay still without breaking the surface thension of the water.

A cup of tea for Bugz! And a biscuit. The cork will float to the highest point on the water, which is the side of the cup when the meniscus is U-shaped, and the middle when the cup is overfilled and surface tension keeps the water in.

Mindtrap is good for the brain :)

Well, I did lots, but then lost my password file. So now I've officially solved 17 levels.
