So, that plan was crap. And I apologize deeply for throwing the salt at the door!

Oh, that's okay, that's what I thought would happen to the tentacles if they were there for us to give them the salt, now we know it does the same thing to the door.

With no tentacles there, it is now possible to open the door, but I have a feeling that would be a bad idea for one who is not heavily armed.
