@Angelica
No. Some need extra energy, e.g. wireless phones need power to transmit the call or charge the mobile part ...

Land based phones that are hardwired get minimal power from the phone line, but enough to power it. Red wire is the hot wire, black is negative, green and yellow are the voice relay wires. Cordless phones do not work without power as the phoneline doesn't generate enough power to send the signal needed for the cordless handset to operate. So it's entirely possible that Elsa heard the phone ringing.

So we don't know if the power in the house is out or not?

Exactly.
But: What about the light at the door?

Well, that's out, but the bulb might have just blown.

Do we have a new lightbulb to test that?
Otherwise we might just try to ringe the bell. If it doesn't work, power is off.

Bell may have never worked, the light switch may be turned of. Besides Elsa said there was a light on in that room. Anybody thought of throwing the main breaker to the house?

What a waste of a thunderstorm. Although maybe the green smoke is a clue.

Where would the breaker be? Isn't it usually in the cellar? We'd have to get in first to do that.

Sometimes you can find it out back of the house if it's an older house.
