I'd like to say Robert Johnson but I'm not sure how much more he could have achieved. He inspired the likes of Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan etc. The musical landscape would have been very different without him. So I vote for no-one until I think about it some more.
p.s. How much credit can you give to Michael Jackson for his Motown days? Did he actually have any say in the matter or was he just doing what he was told? It's not as if the Jackson 5 were particularly original either, much as I love them.
