I think this method is fine...
but you really should offer some kind of alternative, such as a toggle setting for the firemode.
Even without this new magnet shot, the controls could still use more alternatives...
For instance, having to spin the mousewheel to hit the ball at its fastest speed every volley could be simlified
you could have an alternative mode which uses a toggle for spins, so that a down scroll will have all volleys hit with backspin etc.
whatever... at the end of the day theres more alternatives, but with all these features, your very unlikely to be able to come up with the "perfect control" solution for everyone...
If you were working for a console, we'd all probably have to buy special custom controller stuff with loads of buttons on...

I used to have a lot of binds but I always used to accidentally press them so I got rid. xD
Used to have a boost bind too. No-one ever took any notice of it. I found I was pressing it more in annoyance than expectation.
It would be good if there was a way to send a message to a specific person - maybe based on crosshair position. If it was differentiated from the rest maybe people would take note. Would need a working ignore feature to prevent abuse.

You could perhaps just adapt the bot-ordering feature from singleplayer into multiplayer (the one with the white circles around players signifying who to talk to).
