I can tell you (he says, in a factual voice), that manhole covers are round because the covers themselves CANNOT be dropped down the hole

For instance, with square manhole covers, the conver can be dropped through the hole on its diagonal

However, since I'm meant to be creative here...

I think manhole covers are round, because there is more chance of fat underground workers fitting through without getting stuck
