I have one near my workplace with both braille and a screen through which the transaction is displayed (Don't they all? and wouldn't a blind person need to be able to see that anyway? so why braille on regular ATMs too?)

Anyway enough talk about the mechanics of it all, Answer the question!

Well, it's called a "Teller machine", maybe it was originally designed to talk to you?

*Sigh*

Teller from the french word teller which means to give money

NOT

I've told you everything I know about ATMs. That being said, all I know about the reasons they put braille on drive-thru ATMs is not so blind people can use them... obviously... So what's the reason. use the right side of your brain people.

by the way, the question was first posed I beleive by comedian George Carlin

Right sorry *bangs head on desk* I feel better now.

How about this:

It's not really braille but a special secret code created by the US government (explaining why no one here from the UK or Germany has apparently heard of this concept) that allows their special black ops agents to obtain funds from anywhere inside the United States.

(maybe I should never have left the manhole question.)

Maybe the braille dots prevent the atms from falling into a manhole without a round manhole cover :)

how do braille things prevent it from doing that?

that's not a rhetorical question either. I think I'd like the explaination

(if I knew how to explain that in English ... at least I know that it should be explanation, not explaination ...)
