Another NA Server Gone

Post by Fooman »

In case your wondering where it went, Fooman's server is no longer DB.

No one was playing on it so I'm switching to UD, 2k4.

I'm actually thinking about putting my UT2k4 to the beta Deathball. Is it stable enouph to put up on a server?

I wouldn't bother with any DB 2.0 beta servers until they have at least sorted out the menu issues.

berbano: NO, please don't, it's better you call it a pre-pre-alpha and putting it on a public server will only result in dissapointed noobs.

You might need to wait for Epic's ut2k4 patch until it's stable. There are some problems that are present in certain systems, so we can't do much about them, because that stuff is handled by Epic's native code. In addition, the CD-key problem many had, happens due to buggy mod support. I guess it hasn't been tested much by Epic.

Well... I understand why people are dropping thier servers.

Let's look at a few things here.

- DB1.9b - good fixes, new things added (HUD sux btw.... can't tell what team your on at first, and can't see who has ball like b4)
- UT2k4 coming out... (Yes Onlsaught does rock... but what's more fun?) Server prices for public servers have skyrocketed at ReconGamer i.e. $70 US for 12 man public server a month!!!!
- Deathball is getting kinda old. (well not really but lemme speak) there aren't near as many nubs as b4... everyone is pretty much veterans or known players. Certain topics about gameplay are annoying people now (I'll explain in another topic).

Realistically I think Deathball in general, if not just DB in USA is on the decline. People are busy doing other things, including myself, and just aren't playing much anymore.

Now as the owner of like the last public NA DB server, I am considering either dropping the server completely, or dumbing it down to a private server. The only way I can see as keeping it public, is for everyone in NA that wants to keep it public (and i mean everyone) to donate to the cause via paypal to help pay for it .::Pfffff:: . I am still coming up with a good plan to make this happen, this will more than likely include some kind of admin access to the server.

Anyone that has better ideas please message me if you know how to, or email me @ lazer_ntc@hotmail.com.

This is Guity, and I am out for now.

one of the reasons there are no nubs.. is because the (f0) server has a whole bunch of custom maps and a very _VERY_ slow download rate.

as for the cost of maintaining a server... maybe davidm can hook NA up with some public deathball servers.

maybe through the MSU?

remember david, 250mil population across the atlantic :)

I fixed both mine, and the F0 server redirect url 2 nights ago and upped a ton of the maps that we lost when the original redirect died. So that part is taken care of. If there's more stuff I missed, you gotta pipe up about it.

Twigstir's deathball server already went.
- Recon wanted $65 dollars a month for a 10 person UT2K4 server .
- My once always full server was becoming less and less used. NA deathball is in a decline.
- Looks like deathball for UT2K4 is a long way off. Looks like they want to implement a lot of new things - vs - just getting what they have working for UT2K4.
- Redirect problems - Thanks for the fix Imaginos
- Wasn't sure taking donations would work. Too few players and doners might want to change the way it was run.
- I was concerned VO would again return to overplaying small cube. I like that map but not all the time.

It's a shame. I started to see a lot of new blood just before UT2k4. The working VO mutator would have help them learn VO without getting bashed and turned off to the game.

Now, most of the time I can't even find a game in the NA. Hope they get a UT2K4 version out before it drys up completely.

Redirect.. NP.. that was killing everyone! And MAN, was I pissed to have lost all those uploaded *.uz2 files...

VO mutator? Not sure what that is, but on our BuD servers I've had the Reg and VO gametypes available for voting ever since I left V3 and added UT2Vote to the server. When FNull's server went to UT2Vote as well, I set them up with a near complete copy of my own server's config - including the VO gametype.

And I agree that things are slowing in the NA scene, I'm not giving up just yet though.
I still see unfamiliar names in the servers now and then. Shame the pugs make the few people playing appear as snobs to the stray rookie that is looking for a game to play.
