What a harsh and cruel mistress the game of football is.
Picture it with me, if you will.
Hartlepool, a lowly team, expected to go from Divison 2 back to Division 3.
Hartlepool, a team who battled hard and fought with honour.
Hartlepool who against all odds made it into the play offs for Divison one.
Hartlepool who in those play offs was 9 minutes (inc Extra) from going to the final for a shot at being in Divison One for the first time in the clubs history.
1-0 the score, until the hand of this harsh mistress was shown and Bristol (who!?) scored, 86th minute. A blow, to be sure.
How euphoria turned to despair as they equalised, how despair turn to distress as Bristol scored again in the 92nd minute and proceeded to waste the rest of the time to win the game.
An emotional shot of the Hartlepool fans is broadcast to millions of viewers nationwide.
The dream is over.
Cardiff is for next season, as is Division 2.
