DB needs more idols!

Please do tell me if I'm the only one, and shoot me down if so, but I always loved watching better players when I started Deathball.

Maybe it helps that I wasn't an arrogant noobie and I respected others, but I really loved watching demos etc. and I really had my idols.

I adored Goldeneye, Holy_Surfing, Catalyst and all these big names.
They thought me a lot by looking at them in demo's (yes guys, sorry for being a pervert :()

All you old-old-skool guys might not know :)
..but for those that only started getting serious about Deathball 1.3 (I'd started at 0.9, didn't like it, skipped 1.0 and 1.1 and started again at 1.2, got serious/frequent playing in 1.3), demos of pro-matches and stuff like that were really great.

I remember the best ones being the cY(13) vs TEZC, and my personal favourite: TEZC-D vs TEZC-L \o/ (most thought it was a boring game ;) but I liked it a lot :o even though there was little scoring, I *loved* Cata in that match)

I really watched them thoroughly, from the top to watch team-tactics, from keepers to watch sweepers and attackers, and the keepers themselves.
And from first person viewpoints of a lot of great players.

Yes, I was there stalking, pretty much every great match that had it's demo posted on the league site or anywhere else, sometimes up to months later.

Now what I ask is, can we bring this back? Our current noobies hardly ever have idols I think, they don't have these great demos, and most of all, they won't see how deathball is best played, and how many of us fell in love with it: great, wonderful teamplay.
It's great having idols, and it's definitely worth having a goal in Deathball to keep noobies playing.

I'm not sure what exactly I'm asking, but if only there could be a demo-section put up anywhere, be it on these forums for people to post (although that won't work ;p), a demo section on deathball.net, or somewhere on db-community.
It would be great :) I for one would be watching again ;) stalking you all :o

edit: also posted on db-community

I posted the same thing some months ago, because I feel exactly the same!
I also had my idols, TEZC-Rage (mostly because everybody thought he was leet, and he had the same name) and Holy_surfing (he was PIMPED everywhere, basicly being the volley king etc, also loved that)

I also spectated many pickups, while I don't see any newbies do that.
Or even worse, the newbies that don't talk! =X But thats not the point, I also had my idols, (even froste is one now, together with onge =X) So yea Messy, neat idea :D

jolleh is forming a new "über"-team for 2.0 (at least he wants to :D)... maybe we can get some cool server demos from them /o/

hm well.
i think a demo-forum would be some kind of useless..
maybe on 2k4 that s.o. has to demorec the dbl games.
if there might be a dbl...
or the games will be played..

great idea and all..

but the only trouble with getting more noobies into the game is when they decide to hear about mirc and pickup, it ruins the games, as dbpickup is the only way us pros can have a decent match apart from officials. personally i like clanbase back but nm.

and i have to say, my idol = the gimic :) as i started in 1.6,
also i saw a few demos on gobby = w00t

no offense... but the above post contains what I see to be as part of the problem..

i have nothing against pickups but I do believe more skilled people should be playing on public servers if they expect this mod to get more popular.

i can count the number of 'pros' playing on publics on a regular basis on one hand.

of course 'noobs' are going to find pickup games... but the people who go to at least this much effort to get a good game are probably going to be the type of people who will try to learn the skills needed to compete at higher levels.

They can't get these skills playing against total morons and I doubt they'll learn much about advanced team tactics with bots (though I do like the bots).

please people, be an 'idol', play with skill on publics and inspire people to stick with deathball

I used to have some idols too when I first started playing DB. What was best about them was that these aussie players were so helpful to the n00bs like myself. :)

TBH I think there are too many really good players on about the same skill level in this community. I cant imagine a unbeatable team. All of us are idols :joy:
