Connection Issues

Well... this has been going on for years now and... i'm a bit tired of having so many lag problems when playing db, never really managed to play db with decent conditions this whole time, so... if anyone can help me out, i'd really apretiate it...

Here's how it goes:

I have now a 4096/256 connection, cable. Back in the early days, i had 640/128, and it was _actually_ better, don't ask me how. The ping averaged from 70 in the best servers to 110 on the worst servers, which on its own is already bad when compared, but heck... i'm in portugal, right? :\

In the meantine, my ISP _slowly_ upgraded our connections.... first to 1024/128, then to 2048/256, and now finally to 4096/256.
except instead of showing higher performance, it revealed to become ridiculously worse during server gameplay.

If i start a download, thru IE or a download manager, the speeds are notable, 450 to 500 Kb/sec, which is nice... but when i login to a game server, namely the db servers, it's a lag fest (which is my current pub nickname).

In general, the ping is around 170ms... no lower than this, for a fact. Sometimes, on certain days and certain hours, the ping escalates, as in 200+, 300+, and the all sweet 999+.

The most visited public server these days is g.k.o., and sometimes 18+ when it's not on a pickup, i seem to lag the worst there too. DBL3 however, i once noticed good pings there (60ms, tho i was alone). Could it be a specific routing problem? But if so, could it be _this_ bad? :\ It's just so fucking nasty, i give up playing after 10 mins...

I know for a fact that nothing else is working on the background. I got firewall, anti-virus, i constantly check the open connections with "netstat -a", i've tried turning off the firewall and/or anti-virus, and even the packetloss count isn't that high anymore like in the old days, where it was terrible. It's just the ping that's terrible now.

I'm clueless to what is causing this. I get good pings in the World of Warcraft servers, and apparently the connection is fine everywhere else.

For example, what is the correct netspeed for my connection?
I used to have 8250 with my old conn, worked the best, now i've tried 10k, 9k, 8k, but with no improvements (actually 8250 still feels the best, despite being a 4 Mbit now o_0)...

Any suggestions or ideas could be useful.

Thanks in advance..

- Holy

Well... i don't care about the rest of ut2k4, i posted this here because i wanna know if someone else in the db community has experienced any similar problems, and if so, what solved them.

Well you could run a few tracerts to tell you if it is the routing.

As you say, must just be some weird routing to Holland if only gameservers and Juice are bad for you. Don't know if that goes for Holy too. You're not with the same ISP as him are you?

in theory it isnt the same ISP, one works exclusively in cable connections and mine works os xDSL only. But, both are part of the major corporation (PT) that basically still has the monopoly of communications here in Portugal.
That monopoly is beginning to change however, since now other companies are risking and investing more on this, which is the reason we FINALLY have connections like 16Mbps and 8Mbps for home users at reasonable prices.

If i have time to reinstall DB ill check if the same happens to me ingame.

except a 16Mbit still costs about 85 euro/month, can't afford something like that... I only experience problems with _deatball_ really (unaware if other modes of ut2k4 too), every other game runs fine really.. :/

Recently, when i tried to play one day (pubs, gko, whatever else was on), i had a ping of 70... it was great, no pl either, finally nice to be able to play a match properly... Except it didn't last long, as the next day it was back to the usual ping average of 170ms... I did nothing different that day... sucks :|
