Why bother with clones - when you can play the original?

Post by awp »

Well if we shouldn't bother with clones, shouldn't the "start-button" on the front link to http://www.thisisnotporn.com ?? ...the ORIGINAL game ?

just a curious party ...

Because notpron is no clone of thisisnotporn. If you compare a bit, those two are completely different, though DavdiM says, he was inspired by thisisnotporn.

Well, if notpron is not a "clone" of thisisnotporn than none of all the other riddles are notpron clones as they all follow the same schema. And this schema was introduced with thisisnotporn.

Of course most of the games differ in the kind of riddles and maybe the quality of the riddles/levels, but all in all they are all just the same.

The big difference is, that notpron somehow became very popular and so it is currently the most succesfull "clone" ...

But I agree with awp, it's a little bit curiuos and of course a little bit arrogant to call all the others "notpron clones".

Notpron is the most popular because it is the best one.
It has a good learning curve and the levels make you want to continue playing. And the riddles are fair.

Thisisnotporn had nothing like that. The levels are unfair and you can only do some of them if you have read a certain book.

I would not call any of the games "fair". You always reach a level where you are lost without specific knowledge.
If you think thisisnotporn is unfair because you need to read a book than notpron (and all the others) are unfair because you need to read some stuff about ASCII or how to manipulate images or that jpegs can carry EXIFS and so on.
They all are "unfair" in some way.

/edit: I just remember the "music" level in notpron where I was totally lost as I can not "hear" notes/tunes ... It's always unfair in some way ...

Yeah but learning what ascii is or what exif is can be done for free and with a quick google.
Notpron can be solved only with a computer, internet connection and some brains and it doesnt require external stuff.

As i stated in the /edit part: If you can not "hear" notes you got a handicap that you can not beat even with quick learning some free stuff from the net ...

Same for guys who are colorblind ...
... or deaf ...
... or just can not see quick movemenst (short GIF animations) ...

Just because it was fair for you, it doesn't mean that it is fair for all the others ...

Well, it's fair for most.
For those with physical problems, there's always someone who can help here in the forums.

And I still think thisisnotporn is unique. It never got cloned like notpron.
Sure, they all are called "web riddles", but that still doesn't make them similar or equal. That's if you'd say, every movie is a clone of the very first movie.

Physical problems are awful yes but they're not the end. And i highly doubt that ANYTHING on this world will be equally fair for absolutely everyone, it's asking too much

I, for example, am almost legally deaf. Not enough to need to learn ASL stuff, but because of that i have absolutely no notion of tunes and music. Did it stopped me in the very first musical level? No! I did what anyone would do. I called someone good enough with music to tell me what the hell those tunes where

I agree with you and that's why i said

>>But I agree with awp, it's a little bit curiuos and of course a little bit arrogant to call all the others "notpron clones".<<

because either all of them are clones or none of them.
And if David (or who ever) calls the others clones of notpron, than I suppose that all are clones because they all follow the same (technical) schema (like all movies follow the same technical)schema.

So either you state that the others are clones of notpron and accept that notpron is a clone itself or you say notpron is no clone and accept that all of the games are unique and none of them is a clone.

Both is not possibe ...

Of course, but thats the same with the book "Dance, Dance, Dance"
You can call someone who read it or go to the next library and borrow it.

So anyway, it's always unfair in some way and in this case there is no difference between notpron and any other game.

I'd put them in different "genres".

Some have a learning curve with hints for the first levels (many of them, like notpron).
Some have a story, a plot to follow.
Some just throw you into the riddle pool without any further introduction (like thisisnotporn).
For some, you need some kind of computer knowledge (for the most of them, like notpron).
Some even require the riddlers to go out!
Some are limited to some kind of riddles (e.g. only image riddles or something like that).
And few require a book to be read (like thisisnotporn)

@SoulManager-
You can say that if thisisnotpron wasnt created, notpron wouldnt be created.
But when David says- "Why bother with clones" He means the riddles like mine and yours that were inspired by notpron (=If notpron wasnt created these riddles wouldnt exist).
David never said thisisnotpron is a clone.

But soulmanager calls notpron a clone which it isn't. DavidM was inspired to make a webriddle of his own, NOT to make a riddle like thisisnotporn.
That is some basic difference many don't see.

Solomonic ;)

@Orio: Exactly. But does it matter which one was the inspiring one? I guess no.

So it doesn't matter if I played thisisnotporn or notpron first (in my case it was thisisnotporn but as David mentioned, it wasn't that funny and i soon dropped it). But i wouldn't say that thisisnotporn inspired me in any way in creating soulmanager. As you can read on my site I was "inspired" by notpron but not to make a copy of it. I just wanted to use the same technical schema but put some different content in (for instance a kind of story that keeps the riddles together). So if you call my game a clone you are right. But to call it a clone of notpron is not the truth at all. If these games are clones than they all are clones of the first one existing and that was not notpron (and maybe also not thisisnotporn).
That's why I have som problems with the "Why bother with clones ..." statement.

I hope you understand my point. I don't want to blame anyone or any game and it is completely unimportant for me which game is a clone of which other.
It's just not the truth that this statement is telling and none of the arguments you (or anyone else) offer can change that.
