Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Announces New March 2007 date for European Launch of PLAYSTATION 3
No change in launch date for Japan and North America
London, Wednesday 6 September 2006 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that it would revise the launch date of its PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system in the PAL territories of Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Australasia from 17th November 2006, as previously announced to March 2007.
Launch dates for Japan and North America will remain the same, which are November 11th and November 17th respectively.
The revision of the launch date in the SCEE territories is caused by the delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group, thus affecting the timely procurement of key components to be utilised in PLAYSTATION 3.
The previously announced PLAYSTATION 3 shipment forecast of 6 million units globally within the fiscal year ending 2007 is not changed.

For those who might have the slightest of interest the PlayStation 3 has been delayed in Europe until March 2007, although America and Japan will still get it in November.
The yields on Cell aren't exactly stellar. Plus Sony have stated that they expect chips to fail while in operation. Having 7 SPEs (co-processors. It actually has 8 but one has been disabled to improve yields) is a real headache for developers and will make early software underperform (although this didn't hurt the PS2. No Microsoft then of course). Developers have said it will take twice the effort to get optimal performance when compared to the Xbox 360.
As for Blu-ray, they can't make enough discs or drives. The main problem was that Holywood studios weren't happy with the DRM system, which prevented large-scale manufacturing until just recently. The yields for the discs are currently around 80% though, which compares well to DVDs (around 90%), and things are certain to improve.
Sony had intended to release the PS3 a year ago (I'm sure you know this). Cell and Blu-ray have prevented it. Giving the Xbox 360 two christmases on its own is a massive blow. To add insult to injury the GPU has had to have its clock speed cut by 10% (a GPU that wasn't even part of the original PS3 design). This will make it perform much closer to the 360.

Im not a console fan myself, neither do i care much, but i always had this feeling that PS3 would not live up to the hype.
Unless Sony is able to present us a console that's truly something unique and much more powerful (which seems unlikely at this point), MS pretty much conquered the video game console market in only its second generation.

Nerds don't own consoles (although I hear there may be a version of Linux for the PS3 so who knows).
The only one I'm interested in is the Wii. The other two bore me.
