maybe it goes to show how there's less and less respect to life in the world today.
a consequence of extreme materialistism?

Individualism schmindividualism. Of course it's easier to shout at people and even encourage them to commit suicide when you're miles away behind your computer; but things like these happen in cities, where people are encouraged by crowds to jump off buildings etc. (A few months ago a crowd of 20 was doing a countdown in a Dutch city not far from where I am now..)
We've reached for the first time since the Stoa [correct me if I'm wrong please

], a point in history where suicide is no longer looked down upon but encouraged.
The limit for things that still shock us is being pushed further and further, and as we search to be entertained by more and more new things, we also seem to grow more easily accustomed to things like death, no matter how violent or realistic or even, indeed,
real!
Have people just stopped caring?
(And is this a good or a bad development..?)
ps: TITS OR GTFO

Actually, Messy, I don't agree with you totally here. But then, I don't really understand what you mean with "Stoa". As far as I know stoa has something to do with Greek architecture, but obviously that's not what you are referring to here.
Anyway, compared to the Roman empire where it was even considered a nice and respected activity to witness people pointlessly fighting for their lives and -- unavoidably -- being slaughtered while the crowd cherished and clapped their hands, our attitude towards death is still pretty innocent. So there have been many points in history where the situation has been worse. But I do agree with you that it is getting worse and worse here, and perhaps soon, if we do not guard ourselves, the situation will go out of hand. It can't be a good development anyway. rather the opposite.

Great. Yeah. So how is that relevant to suicide?

Yeah, I see. I was rather talking about this....

...where you talked about detah in itself, rather than suicide. Might be I misunderstood you, then.

it's lack of respect for anything other than what we see, touch, feel, etc... (materialism)
when materialism is the social philosophy.. then the body is just an object... and as an object, it's destruction means nothing more.
we don't look at people and empathise with them their pain and happiness and see that thing that's more than just object... therefore.. we have no respect.
