my take on the newb situation..
I believe the way to tackle the newb situation is to let newbs play with newbs and pros play with pros, now although this seems to be a horrible decision at first, let me explain.
When we all started deathball way back we were all newbs, we all enjoyed ourselves, were werent annoyed by people not knowing what to do, we were learning ourselves.
We learned gradually, prephaps we would have learned faster if someone was there to teach us, but there wasnt, we all enjoyed ourselves and learned at a steady pace.
the situation is now that we all know it all, the best of us get annoyed at newbs not knowing the basics, even if we dont bitch. And it can be very frustating to be wide open and have no one pass to you, to be goalie and have no defence, etc etc.
But we enjoy playing with pros.
so heres where the devision comes in.
If we let the newbs play with the newbs, sure they will learn slower, it might take them a long time to learn all the features, etc etc etc.
but there will be NO BITCHING, and they will ENJOY themselves, just as we did when we were all newbs!
I have quite a few DM playing friends i recently introduced to deathball, they told me that whilst it seemed cool playing with good players they got little ball time/were bitched for their mistakes, and generally got nowhere. Now you may say "so teach them" but why? the newbs enjoy playing with other newbs, they are playing with people of their level and generally have FUN, just like we did when we were all newbs way back. Its not about how good they are, if we want the community to grow we have to make sure people have fun, even if they learn slowly...
The newbs will learn, teaching eachother the things they find out, generally growing as a newb community, getting better and better, just as we did, and when they reach our level, the will want to play with us, they will be frustated by other newbs, just as we are.
So why not somehow find a system where people generally group together as pros and newbs..prephaps the community isnt large enough to do this at the moment, but this is what will fix the problem in my opinoin.
I have thought about uploading a ut2003.ini containing a buddy list that lists all well known community players, that way people can find other well known players and group together, generally playing with other pros. But i want to hear your take on the situation first.
thx

As you well know (we had a discussion on this in #deathbal IRC), I could not disagree more strongly with this idea.
If you cant stand playing with noobs then there is something wrong with YOU.
If you dont want to play with noobs, use the pickups
Dividing such a small community (indeed any community) is a bad thing, and IMHO, will kill off the interest of lots of new people
IMO, this idea is selfish and is the worst thing that can happen to DB at the moment
I agree that there is something wrong with things at the moment, but I agree with DavidMs rant (and no I am NOT sucking up here :p ). It is the fault of the people who cant remember what it was like to be noobs. The people who swear, are abusive, and who support vo servers (*spit*
). You are trying to make an "exclusive" thing which is VERY VERY BAD!!!

Wibble you say "this is wrong, this is wrong, i disagree" WHY do you, just saying its wrong isnt constructive at all. and i dont mind playing with newbs actually, its slightely irritating at times but i play with them an aweful lot, but from my experience NEWBS PREPHPER TO PLAY WITH NEWBS, so it would be better for THEM, we already have pickup yes, so this isnt selfish, im worried about deathball dying

im pretty sure ballers is a similar idea to pickups.
i have to agree with wibble, separation of a community the size of ours is a ridiculous idea.
creating a divide between the "so called pros" and the "noobs" is laughable, and would only enlargen the current divide. The "noobs" who do want to get better would have no chance to improve their skills above that of low level pub server play. Pub play is pretty shitty at times, the good pub games are found when a number of players are grouped together to have fun, not based on their standing within the community, their skills or clan affiliation.
finally, who would decide on who is a "pro" and who is a "noob"? exactly, we all suck as hard as the next person.
Playing with a group of better players improves your skills faster than beating a server of "noobs", and im pretty sure 90% of clanned players will understand this transistion. Yes, in an ideal world you could kick all the new players leaving room for a better set of players, but its simply not feasible and would only result in more people being turned away, and further segregation of this fragile community.
thx
