US DeathBall getting too private?
Anyone remember the times when you could go browsing the pubs and join any one of a dozen games here in the US? In the course of a night you could easily meet just about everyone who plays actively in North America. You'd see good and bad players, maybe get some tips in teamsay, get some ribbing for flubs, but always a good time.
Now it's come to this: having a letter in front of your nick to get into the closed "pug" match on a passworded server that someone who is new can't even spectate the game to see how it's played.
Sure, we love our deathball.
We love it so much that we only want to play games with people on our level and of those, just with ones that use IRC!
No wonder the community is seeing so much attrition. People get bored seeing nothing but the same faces over and over. New people can't even get in. People who are borderline interested see nothing but empty or passworded servers. If that isn't discouraging, I don't know what is. American players have to get rid of this growing elitist ballers attitude and start welcoming noobs again.
Just my $0.02

amen to that Imag. I've been thinking the same thing for quite some time. noobs are frustrating but it was nice to see more people coming into the game every day. I remember playing 7v7 on IGL server for hours on end and it was never the same 14 people for more than 5 or 10 minutes and it was much more fun than anything that's been going on in the past 3 months.
I'd much rather play with a 180 ping on a pub than hang with the crowd on Mt Olympus.

We only have one good server over here in Australia, and it is very rarely full. We have only about 40-50
players in all. Our server is always open and n00bs have been steadily coming in, increasing our numbers.
The only time the server isn't open is on Sundays for like an hour when we have all our clan matches.
Yay for the Aussies.

A major thing to our lack of players is because of the ballers games. Thats at least one locked server all day... and it doesnt help that more than half the NA servers seem to be down (at least when i ask). I think some sort of advertising would help a lot... more players > more clans > more servers > more players. Free mod tho, ads cost money, so maybe not the greatest idea.
I forgot...
Also, it seemed that our dropoff happened mainly after 1.4b. I know personally that was my favorite time... you could easily see 3 or 4 pubs nearly full all at the same time. I dont know what was different between then and now besides gameplay, but 1.4b seemed to bring in way more new players anyway.

DB has gotten more and more n00b friendly from version to version. People that are actually good get mad because some people dont listen or are too stupid to listen. You say "Don't be mean to noobs" when when i came there was already a well established base of players that were a lot better than myself. I took the crap from them, many of use did, and we got better. We didnt come here and whine how "people are mean to us...
" and we didnt have any sort of "be nice to noobs" campaign.
The problem is not the game, its a combination of people losing intrest at a greater rate of those comming to the game...
When DB first started it was slow... i remember always only playing with the original 4 DB clans that had maybe 10 players each tops. Thats an entire community base of 50 people. Now theres at least 65 idlers in IRC at all times of clanners and regular folks.
The problem is that people dont want to get involved with the community like they once did. Pug games are open to ANYONE. Its not our fault that they dont get involved. The vast game changes between 1.4b and now are a factor of why people left but there are other individual cases (such as that with 13th Disciple and Scarface of SoP) that were for the most part uncontrollable circumstances.
I would definatly play more pugs if others were willing to. I often see a few players on pubs but not a great number. I rarely ever see any V3's play non-VO games besides Blauzen, I rarely see any NS's besides Bags and Uberslacker, a few rushers still pub.. maily Scott and Tesal, and a few SoPers still pub like Uni and LegolaS...
But on that note why should we pub when we can play a pug with people of usually pretty equal skill? As a community we want to pull away from those of lesser skill. Whats the point of playing in pub games other than to show off or mess around? I havnt seen a single person ger recruited for a clan in a long time that doesnt hang around on IRC.
If you look at hockey in NA theres 3 main classes. The pro's, travel hockey and houseleague (local). All first and second tier teams quit because its hard to get better when the better teams keep advancing. So what do they do? they quit the second teir team and try and get into a better clan. That is what is suppost to happen. Unfortunetally, this means that the clan completely breaks up opposed to continuing on after a few people leave and its already happened a few times. WKD, R6, PW, L7, etc. The only ones that have really continued on were SoP, TFO, and EL...

Ever thought that the "noobharassment" might be much more intense now ?
people that just picked up the game will most likely not continue to play if they walk into a wall of cussing etc, on publics, i've seen the development, it IS more intense now.
I, as most players, play for the entertaining factor of db, and i think i can speak for the most of us when i say that unfriendliness and "noobharrasment" would not encounrage anyone to play this game.
i joined DB in the late stages of 1.4b (played it for about 2 weeks, then next release was out, or something)
I hardly got harassed at all, only the first few days when i was learning the basic stuff. The only times i ever got yelled at were volley games, cuz as a newb i didnt know how to volley.
Other then that, i hardly see any n00b harassment, unless they are complete newb and leave the keeper box, or just run with the ball and do nothing, or are the type of newb that just likes to go out and fuck with anybody and everybody just for kicks.
