$300 6 month old Vid Card... wasted...

Well, I haven't played the past 2 weeks because my Radeon 9700 pro is toast. Did the voltage mod and it was fine for 6 months until I dropped the soldering iron on it while redoing the soldering. It must have gouged out a little piece of the board or a trace or something... sigh. All my fault, I know, I know... Butttttt...

I've been saving up for another car, so I had the extra 3 bills to get a 9800 PRO yesterday (my b-day present for me, lol) :p :). I'm not going to go solder on the card directly now, I think I've learned my lesson there, but I did voltmod the vcore, and overclocked it to 450/340. Did the voltmod w/ a smd grabber, the card is running fairly cool still, but more cooling would help. :D. Putting a waterblock/TEC on it very soon, hoping to get over 500 core. I'm also planning on not messing this one up, lol. The 9700 was good enough for me, I got a 400/340 overclock, i'd rather I didn't mess it up, but oh well.

Just wondering if anyone else voltmods their stuff or uses watercooling. I have voltmods on my mobo, and all my old vid cards, lol. The 9700 was the 1st one i messed up, and it didn't even fry, it was my mistake for dropping the hot iron on it. Ahh yes, I'm a bonafide computer geek now. :) Wasn't like this a year ago, I tell ya. :ban:

why would you solder the card on the mobo? :)

No :D, you solder resistors on the mobo, and you can do the same thing on the vid card too. It lets you get higher overclocks by raising the voltage :).

i'll stick to doing absolutely nothing about it :D

Overclocking may get higher performance, but it kills the card faster.

I love doing that kind of shit.. Computers have been my pastime since I was about 6 (good ol 8086)... Haven't burned up the Radeon 9700 yet... but voltmods, and any other type of overclocking definitely decreases the lifetime of it, but hell, we live in a world where technology changes every day, so if I only get 2 years out of a 4 or 5 year card... its all good..

I also do alot of modding for PS2 and XBOX... XBOX is an awesome tool.. Especially with XBMP and the ability to play streaming movies from the comp in a .bin format!!
