Review #12 - DBW-NG-CastAway

Post by Armagon »

This last week has been particularly hectic, with the final tests I've just had. However, with my TAFE course now finished, I am free to write another review. Today I'll be taking a look at DBW-NG-CastAway by Nolan.

So what's the map like?
This map is set on some sort of platform in the middle of the ocean (or a lake maybe, I don't know for certain). All across this platform there are multiple ramps, dips, boxes and several smaller platforms. In the center of the map there are a couple of fences and this bizarre central structure with a ramp that goes right through the middle of it.

Given the maps layout, the spawns seem pretty well placed. As it should be, every player is accessible and in turn can shoot at enemies without much difficulty, though some people may seem harder to reach than others. Super weapons are placed in fair locations, six of them in total. There are two in each half, and another two above and below the central structure.

The gameplay of this map is a bit different from other DBW maps, because there are a few smaller details (mainly the boxes) and quite a few angled surfaces. Some of these smaller details may be used and potentially result in some really unique, but effective shots, if the attacker knows what he's doing. However, whilst they create the potential for good shots, they also can be obstructive to shots. It more or less depends on the skill of the shooter. I'll say this though, you have to be more careful with grenades on this map.

Visuals of this map are nice. A little bit foggy, the wind blowing hard, water lapping up around all sides of the field. It really feels like it's in the middle of the ocean. The entire platform feels like it was a part of a dock, and simply drifted away somehow (or at least, that's what it feels like to me). One of the fun little quirks of the map is the bathtub guy in the blue team's left corner (their left). He is basically standing in a bath tub, cheering and jeering. If you sit and listen, you will be more than likely to notice him screaming things like "Blast his nuts off!".

This map ran well on my system. Nobody else should have problems running it.

Pros
- Good atmosphere (if not a little unusual).
- Nice framerates.
- Fun.
- The bathtub guy. \o/

Cons
- The little boxes can be a nuisance.
- When trying to get the super weapon underneath the central structure, you can fast become easy prey due to the tightness of the area. True that grabbing a super weapon shouldn't be without risk, but when you could almost ALWAYS end up dead it would probably be considered too risky to go for.

Overall
Graphics 7/10 (by DBW standards)
Gameplay 7/10

A fun little map, definately worth a look if you enjoy DBW.

hi armagon,

again thx for your review.

i heard from many places that the bathtub guy rocks,
when build this map i just couldnt get around the bathtub and
the guy, when i found them in one of the unreal packages :)

gameplay is also a little bit different.
if you shoot a full loaded weapon, you surely shoot to far,
so it makes it a little bit trickier to hit the enemy.

on the test map you can easyly kill on emeny player in the first round, by shooting with full throttle in on direction.
